Sunday marked the highly anticipated Grand Opening of the Resorts World Sentosa Casino and Theme Park and the surge in visitors to the island was off the charts. Around 75,000 guests were recorded visiting the island accompanying the few days around the casino's opening. This is a 20% increase from last year at around the same time during the Lunar New Year.
On Monday, the island saw another 67,000 people visit and it is no doubt that the new attractions on the island are the main reason for the increase.
With such a massive influx of anxious visitors to the new attraction, one can assume that the queues were long for both the casino and the surrounding resort restaurants and they would undoubtedly be correct.
As a matter of fact, the massive number of tourists amounted to lines with waiting times of as long as two hours. Locals had the option to pay a S$100 levy fee to gain faster entrance into the establishments, but foreigners were left to endure the full wait time. One visitor complained, "I have waited here for two hours, it is too long."
Krist Boo, vice president of communications for the Resort responded by saying, "The queue is very overwhelming, we have a very good response to the casino opening...the foreigners' queue can vary: as and when the casino can take more people, we will let them in. It can take from a few minutes to an hour plus."
The restaurants were no exception to the long wait times, but it was nothing compared to the hours of waiting for the casino. Guests waited a doable 30 to 40 minutes to be seated. So far, all of the Sentosa dining locations have not been opened so the ones that were opened saw a ton of business. One restaurant event reported having doubled the amount of business compared with the prior week.
So far, it looks as though the opening of the Sentosa Resort Casino will have a very positive impact on the economy of Singapore. The long awaited project is now complete and the outcome looks to be a big success.
