The History of Bingo
The game of Bingo has evolved tremendously throughout the years. Starting originally as a lottery game called Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia (roughly translated as I Play Italian Lottery), the game became popular in Italy during the 1530’s. It spread to France next during the 1700’s where playing cards, tokens and the reading out of numbers were added. A century later, the game traveled to Germany where teachers used it in classrooms to teach children spelling, math and history.
In 1929, under the name Beano, Bingo was finally introduced to America (starting in Atlanta, Georgia). The game was played using dried beans, a rubber stamp and cardboard sheets. Toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe noticed how engaged the player were and decided to take the game with him to New York. Upon introducing the game to his friends, one person while playing yelled out “Bingo!” instead of “Beano,” and thus the game got a new name. The Lowe Bingo Game was invented after that having two versions: a 12-card set which sold for $1 and a 24-card set that sold for $2. By 1930, Lowe, along with mathematician Carl Leffler, had created 6,000 different bingo cards to be played with.
By the 1940’s, the game spread throughout the country and slowly turned into the game we know today, with cards and balls inscribed with numbers. Many competitors wished to use the game, to which Lowe agreed that as long as they used the name and paid him $1 a year.
As online casinos grew increasingly popular in the 1990’s, Bingo hoped on the bandwagon. Rather than the game that’s played in traditional bingo halls, online Bingo uses a random number generator to choose cards as well as balls for each game. This creates an entirely virtual experience. A main beneficial feature of online Bingo is the chat option which allows players to converse with one another. It creates a sense of community. Sites with popular chat rooms are typically favored by many.
