In Massachusetts, lawmakers are currently deciding whether or not to adopt Slot Machines and/or Casino gambling into their state. Needless to say, pro-gambling groups are increasing their lobbying efforts within the state.
According to a review posted by The Associated Press, in 2005, companies and groups spend $764,500 on lobbyists in press their pro-gambling message on Beacon Hill. During the first half of 2009, those same groups tried again, as Massachusetts is bringing the subject back up for debate. The previous total from 2005 was surpassed this year, as groups poured $777,983 into lobbying.
That amount may match the $1.57 million spent in 2008 after the state's racetracks were locked in a failed attempt to end greyhound dog racing.
In total, for the past four and a half years, pro-gambling groups have spend over $5 million on lobbying just in Massachusetts alone. (Source: Gambling911)
