Talk show host Montel William is well-known for his love for poker. He’s befriended many of poker’s elite and hosted some of the best celebrity poker charity events over the years. Unfortunately, recent news has broke that the television star is being sued for breach of contract and other claims after an online poker agreement turned sour.
According to the Montel Media Group website in April of 2008 Williams created a concrete plan and a clever business scheme that he branded International Team Poker League (IPL).
The plan experienced a setback Tuesday when attorneys for Guardian Gaming Ltd. filed a lawsuit in a U.S. District Court claiming breach of contract by Williams and the IPL.
Guardian claims it was given a written agreement promising a 25 percent ownership stake of IPL in exchange for a $300,000 initial investment, along with developing and operating an Internet gaming site.
Then, according to the lawsuit, Williams and IPL ran off and partnered with another company to complete the tasks in a fashion more favorable to Williams, without paying Guardian the promised initial investment.
The lawsuit includes five charges against Williams and the league including breach of contract, intentional misrepresentation, fraud, unjust enrichment, and conversion. In addition, Guardian seeks reimbursement of the initial investment, punitive damages, prejudgment interest, and legal fees.
Miss B says: Montel Williams has been great to the game of poker. So hearing this news is very unfortunate. If the allegations are true, Williams and the International Team Poker League should pay up. What do you all make of this?
