Chairman of Wynn Resorts, Stephen A. Wynn announced yesterday that he will be going to Harrisburg on Wednesday to outline his plans to revamp a struggling casino project in Philadelphia to the Pennsylvania state Gaming Control Board. He claims that with his help the new project will become one of "the cutest casino you have ever seen,” but right now he is still waiting on approval. Wynn is said to have first discussed his idea for reviving the Foxwoods Casino project in Philadelphia during a conference call with stock analysts shortly after the company’s year-end results came out. On Tuesday it was confirmed that Wynn Resorts has signed a letter of intent to take control of developing and running the struggling project contingent on state regulator’s approval. The Foxwoods project won one of the city’s two slot licenses back in 2006 but is at risk for losing it if they can’t get their act together soon because of their repeated delays. The original plan was to build a destination resort with a hotel on site for out of town visitors but Wynn says that they would rather focus on developing a “straightforward casino” and drop that portion of the project. This would mean a bigger game floor and potentially more business for hotels already in the area. Wynn would not directly disclose how much the company is planning to pay for the waterfront site but did say that it would not be "an earth-shaking number," indicating that it would probably be relatively generous but not obscene. He is reported to have spent “eight to nine hours day” for the last several weeks trying to work out the exact details of how he would like to develop the Philadelphia casino but appears quite enthusiastic at about the idea. "I'm happy to say we're feeling very good about it," Wynn told analysts. From there he went on to detail some of his plans for the site. "It will have all the bells and whistles of a good-looking casino," he told reporters. These bells and whistles will include 3,000 slot machines, a generous collection of table games, a poker room, an Italian restaurant, a steak house, and an Asian restaurant. He is also very excited about the site’s close proximity to the Italian and Vietnamese neighborhoods of South Philadelphia. He said the area was "all full of my old friends - the Italians and Jews and every conceivable type of ethnic group that likes to play craps and gamble - and they're only 10 minutes away." Then he continued, "I love the proximity of the Vietnamese neighborhood, and I'm going to put in a Vietnamese restaurant for them.” Upon regulatory approval he says the company hopes to be, “out of the box as quickly as we can." Wynn Resorts would take control of the project from the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, who operate the flagship Foxwoods Casino in southeastern Connecticut. The tribe, as well as local investors, would still maintain an interest in the project, but would no longer have a majority stake in the new casino. No news yet on when Wynn Resorts would plan to have the casino completely up and running.

New York Governor David Patterson may be on the verge of yet another scandal. People have recently been putting one of his latest business decisions under the microscope for possible ethics violations. It all has to do with his recent friendship with rapper Jay-Z. In January, event promotion company Aqueduct Entertainment Group (AEG) landed a very lucrative multi-million dollar contract with New York state officials. They were given the rights to upgrade the existing Aqueduct Race Track venue and turn it into a race track and gambling site (sometimes referred to as a racino.) It is to be the only legal gambling site in New York City so as you can imagine there was a lot of competition involved in the bidding process. The question of the ethics involved in the decision arose when it was revealed that Patterson’s friend Jay-Z holds a seven percent stake in AEG through his firm Gain Global Investments Network LLC. Patterson established a friendship with superstar Jay-Z last year during a 9/11 benefit concert. It was later that month that the rap star signed a deal with AEG executives. It is this agreement that has prompted a federal investigation into whether or not Patterson showed an unfair favor to AEG’s contract because of Jay-Z’s involvement. Of course both AEG and Patterson have denied that any such connection exists. AEG claims that they courted Jay-Z for much different reasons. AEG Spokesman Jonathan Rosen told the New York Post, "Given (Jay-Z's) superstardom and his long and deep connection to New York, the partners thought he could bring a unique perspective to shaping a facility that would truly be an entertainment destination…The partners were looking to bring in someone who could bring marketing and community advice to the team." Patterson’s staff however was quicker to the point. When asked about possible ethics violations a female staffer gave the following statement, "There is absolutely no relationship between Governor Paterson's friendship with Jay-Z and the choice of AEG."

Despite a number of setbacks Pinnacle Entertainment is finally ready to open their new casino complex River City Casino next month in St. Louis County. The announcement came on Friday that the complex is all set to open March 4th at 2pm. The 90,000 square foot facility is the second casino opened by Pinnacle in the St. Louis area in the last three years and the seventh casino to open in the region. It’s estimated that the Las Vegas-based gaming company spent over $357 million on its construction and equipment. It will feature more than 2,000 slot machines and 55 table games providing over 1,200 jobs to members of the community. With this new addition Pinnacle will own and operate three casinos in the region. Recently there has been a lot of controversy in regards to one of their other casinos the President Casino. The State Gaming Commission has moved to strip their license from that casino because of the way they have been handling the property. The commission says that the company has let that site become “obsolete and underachieving,” and that they want someone else to take it over. With so much controversy in the air the company has been pushing hard in its advertising for the new complex hoping to make a success of it. The company has suffered hard loses over the last two years but they appear to continue to remain optimistic about the future.

Florida seems like a decent market for the rise of online casinos and Las Vegas Sands is looking to beautiful Miami for its next casino destination according to the Miami Herald. As one of the world’s biggest casino gambling brands, Sands is planning a resort casino in that location which would cost upwards of $3 billion dollars to complete. Recently, the CEO of Sands, Sheldon Adelson has been hard at work preparing the state for the new addition by hiring a lobbyist in Tallahassee and making multiple contributions of a large proportion to casino supporting campaigns in Florida. Even though Ft. Lauderdale legislator, Ellyn Bogdanoff has previously fought for the stop of casino expansion in Florida, she now appears to be on board with the plans. Now that the market for online gambling seems to be at a doing fairly well in places like Las Vegas and Macau, the gaming industry is looking for a way to keep funding those investments. It’s only natural that the Las Vegas Sands would look to a city such as Miami, known for its euphoric atmosphere, celebrity vacationers and famous clubs to plan future projects. The future site of Miami would definitely increase the value of their stocks.

SEGA which just a while ago made its leap into the online gambling world has recently acquired a plethora of games from online casino provider CTXM. This new software along with their already licensed Playtech software should give them an edge on many of their more established rivals in the near future. SEGA Games’ full entrance into the competitive online gambling market is one of the most anticipated events in years. Most of us have a long enjoyable history with the company remembering games from our younger days available on such classic systems as SG-1000, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. It is this sense of nostalgia that the company hopes to cash in on. When its sites become fully operational they will be re-releasing such great titles as Virtua Fighter, House of the Dead, Fantasy Star and Nights along with it. The name SEGA itself certainly provides a lot of weight. The brand is one of the most respected in the world when it comes to gaming. Founded in 1940 it helped propel the world from ancient coin-operated amusements to in home entertainment systems, it introduced the first full-body-experience arcade game, and at one point cornered 65% of the North American Market for gaming. There is no doubt that the company has a long history of bringing entertainment to its customers. This experience should go a long way towards how they handle this new expansion and is already showing itself in many of the steps they are taking. With cutting edge gaming technology they hope to provide consumers with something slick, stylish, highly enjoyable and player friendly. When three such strong brands as SEGA, Playtech and CTXM work together, there certainly are a lot of expectations involved. SEGA truly has all of the elements they need to take the online gambling community by storm. Will they rise to the top or take a misstep and fall prey to their competitors? We’ll find out soon enough. Either way it will definitely be news worthy.
