 On Wednesday, MGM Mirage, one of the world's dominant casino giants has filed suit on six people in China, alleging their operation of a website that violates the trademark rights of the MGM Grand Hotels and casinos in both the US and China.
The lawsuit was filed in Las Vegas at the US District Court. The files claim that the individuals are in possession of registered website names which include words specifically used by MGM Mirage including "MGM" and linking to an online gambling site.
The website in question advertises online casino games and sports betting and is said to be owned by a business known as BetMGM Online Sports. The company also uses lions on their site similar to that which MGM Mirage uses as their logo and in the advertising campaign.
MGM is responsible for many resort and casinos across the world including the ownership of the MGM Grand hotel-casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and the partial ownership, partnership or licensing to the MGM Grand casino in Detroit, Mashantucket Pequot tribe casinos, the MGM Mirage in Connecticut and the MGM Grand Macau casino in Macau, China.
The lawsuit goes into detail about how the sites associated themselves with MGM Mirage, even displaying trademarks and linking to MGM's huge CityCenter website and showing pictures of the MGM Grand Macau. MGM claims that the website was trying to monopolize the publicity being generated by the Grand Opening of CityCenter last month.

"The lead up to the (CityCenter) opening, and the opening itself, received immense publicity and attention from the national and international media, with more than 400 members of press on hand to cover the event."
Defendants deliberately and knowingly chose to register domain names that are nearly identical to the plaintiff's ‘betmgm.com' domain name at a time when MGM Mirage was receiving unprecedented worldwide media attention. Defendants clearly intend to misdirect consumers looking for information about MGM Mirage to their online sports book and casino."
