Macau has seen an enormous amount of success this past year as the industry rivals with that of Las Vegas Strip. Although the only place in China where gambling is legal has seen some of the best casino revenue in the world, the Chinese government is talking with casino licensees about putting some restrictions in place which would hinder growth for Macau casinos.
The industry has managed to survive the recession and restrictions on visas of visitors from the Chinese mainland, now Macau faces a new obstacle as the proposal of limiting table numbers and increasing the age limit for casino players from 18 to 21 looms in the future.
The purpose for these restrictions would be to slow the rapid growth in Macau and to further regulate the gaming industry preventing over expansion. The six casino operators licensed in Macau show their support for the intentions of their local government. SJM Holding Ltd chief executive officer, Ambrose So Shu Fai explained that the casino operators in Macau agree that the gaming market cannot continue to expand indefinitely without further regulation. "We'll explore ways and means as to how we should expand the business," Ambrose said.
How this will affect the Macau gambling Industry remains to be seen. The most likely conclusion would be that further expansion will not be in the future for a while and revenues will slightly drop due to the increased age limits proposed by the Chinese government. With the casino's licensees agreeing to the restrictions, business must not be too bad. Macau will likely continue to be one of the most prosperous casino destinations in the world.
