Underground illegal soccer (aka football) gambling in China is experiencing a massive crack down after a number of scandals surfaced involving bribery and alleged match-fixing.

The industry itself appears to be massive. According to an expert for the Jinghua Times the industry nets about 1 trillion yuan ($14.65 billion USD) annually with casino’s usually taking in around a 10% cut of the profits for an estimated  100 billion yuan ($1.46 billion USD).

Zhang Lu, deputy chairman of Beijing Guo'an football club, is urging the Chinese government to pass a lottery bill and start getting a handle on the situation.

The Chinese Super League season could face some delays in light of a number of recent arrests. Among those facing charges is former Chinese Football Association boss, Nan Yong and his deputy Yang Yimin. Wei Di who took over for Nan last month says they hope to have everything started as planned but it’s been complicated.

"The CSL will not be cancelled, that's for sure," Wei Di, told Monday's Beijing News. "We are preparing for a normal beginning but presently the situation is complicated, we have many things to do in very little time. I do not rule out the possibility of a one week delay or so."

So far more than 20 officials, players and club managers have been arrested or detained on suspicion of either match-fixing or gambling both of which remain illegal in China.
