It was a sight to see in Cyprus when 42 ladies ages seventy-five to ninety-five were arrested after Greek Cypriot law enforcement busted their poker and rummy session in one of the ladies homes. The 42 grannies were all arrested and booked before being released last Sunday around 6pm in Ayios Loannis, Lamassol.
Neighbors began to complain about the noises that were emanating from the woman's home as ladies came and went. When police responded, they found several rooms with poker and rummy tables, an estimated €100 in cash, 546 chips and 530 playing cards.
One of the ladies who were taken to jail that evening spoke up regarding the incident, saying, "It is unbelievable that people would even complain about such a game. If police around the world start busting up Gin Rummy games, there are going to be a lot of elderly people heading to jail." Playing cards is the hobby of many of the elderly women in Cyprus and the law would have a hard time booking all the grannies in town for illegal gambling.
Give the old folks a break, most of the pots are under 5 Euros and these ladies don't have much else to do but gather with their friends for an innocent game of poker or gin rummy. And how much fun is it without adding a little risk to the equation?
One nearly ninety year old Limassol women who preferred to stay anonymous said, "Most of my friends are widows and at our age there is not much to do. For years now we organize afternoon parties at our houses each week, on a rotating basis. We get together, drink tea and play cards. We only gamble a few Euros and it's all just for fun. The only thing police achieve by doing such raids is to ridicule women of a certain age."
The women involved in the games last weekend will be appearing in court. Most likely, none of these women will face any jail time and will have to pay a small fine. With luck on their side, they might just get off with a warning.
