There is a now a device being developed by the Canadian gaming company, TechLink, that game be used in the casino and gambling market to help problem gamblers better control their impulses. The device is used to help guide gamblers to make better decisions and also to keep losses under control.
The piece of technology called GamePlan is known as a responsible gambling device and is currently in the works for use with land based casinos. Even though it is still in the early stages of development, the online casino market is also aware of the device and something like this would be a huge asset for online gamblers as well.
To individualize the device for each player, they create their own profile to track their wagers and winnings as well as losses. As the gambler is playing, choices are offered to the player to keep the experience enjoyable- even after the night is over. The device stores a kind of score to keep tabs on the players money management, in what Techlink calls the "player's reality check."
In order to alert the player of reaching his or her own limit, the machine can be programmed to only allow players a certain amount of time and wagering amount before it locks them out of play. Once the device has met the player's individual limit, it will lock them out of all machines in the casino. The patron can program the device to lock them out for anywhere from one to three days.
Currently the product is scheduled to become available in land based casinos by installing software into the casino's main computer and devices are plugged into the gaming machines. The International Gaming Study has proposed a plan to bring this technology to online casino sites.
