Hoyt Corkins Wins WPT Southern Poker Championship
User Rating: / 0

altHoyt Corkins took home the World Poker Tour Southern Poker Championship title Wednesday evening marking his second WPT title and his sixth final table finishes with the tour. Asked about how he felt about the big win he had to say "It's wonderful...It's been so frustrating coming in second twice, third once and sixth at another final table."

Corkins was the headliner going in to the final match with a major chip lead to start so his big win may not come as a huge surprise to many but runner-up Jonathan Kantor certainly put up a good fight. A few times players managed to level the playing field and even forced Corkins to go all in on the final hand. Unfortunately luck was not on Kantor's side when he lost to Corkins' two pair Ace and 5s.

The $739,486 win was a major for Corkins in more way then one. Not only did it provide him with his second WPT title but it also brought his total career earnings past the $5 million mark and with his victory he topped the 4,000 WPT points mark something only Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu have ever been able to accomplish.

The $10,000 no-limit hold'em tournament was hosted in the Beau Rivage Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi and attracted 208 players overall.

The final rankings were as follows:

1. Hoyt Corkins ($739,486)
2. Jonathan Kantor ($366,643)
3. Jerry Vanstrydonck ($196,829)
4. Jared Jaffee ($135,079)
5. James Reed ($106,134)
6. Tyler Smith ($86,837)

For those interesting in watching the match the WPT Southern Poker Championship will air as part of Season 8 on Fox Sports Net. Next up for the WPT is the WPT Celebrity Invitational and the L.A. Poker Classic both of which will be hosted next month in of course L.A.
