New Year's Luck was on the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino's side Friday afternoon. The famous building, which is located on the Las Vegas Strip went into a state of emergency when the fire alarm went off alerting staff and sending them to a ninth floor room at around 2pm, where a fire was found. The flames are believed to be caused by carless smoking.
Fortunately, the fire was contained to some towels found on the bathroom floor of one of the guestrooms, and was quickly put out by hotel staff. Using some quick thinking and improvising a little, security personnel filled a waste paper basket with water and put the flames out before fire officials arrived at the scene.
The guest staying in the rooms had already checked out and no one was in the room when hotel staff arrived at the scene.
Timothy R. Szymanski, the public education and information officer for Fire and Rescue in Las Vegas, stated that the Fire was responsible for very light smoke on the ninth floor, but no other floors were affected.
No one was injured, but the floor was evacuated for approximately 45 minutes. The damage caused by the small fire is estimated to be around $250.00.
