Delaware is making history with its first legal sports wagering in more than 30 years began yesterday to mark the beginning of a fun filled NFL season. Although state officials were hoping for unlimited betting, most casino operators are pleased with the recent changes to the law. “It’s not as bad as it sounds,” said CEO of Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, Ed Sutor. “I think there will be a lot of curiosity in the first few weeks as people see what type of bets we can offer.”
The new laws allow only parlay, or multiple bets placed on at least three NFL games. In order for the gambler to win, they must bet on all three games correctly. Delaware officials, casinos and sports better were hoping that single game bets would be allowed. They also wanted to expand the sports betting to other sports as well. Those desires were not met as an appeals court ruled that the state’s current exemption to the federal ban on sports betting did not apply to single games or other sports.
One Delaware sports better proclaimed his disappointment saying that gambling is what keeps people interested in sports and gamblers should be able to do it like they do in Las Vegas everywhere else. That isn’t stopping him from placing a bet though. “I get 110 bucks back if I win,” he said. For now, the laws remain the same but something tells me that things are headed in the right direction.
The state could benefit tremendously from the extra revenue unrestricted sports betting would bring in. This will become a motivating factor when state officials fight for the legalization of single game sports betting in the future.
