 On April 28, Duarte was robbed by the very men who were supposed to be paying out his online winnings.
Duarte had thought he'd struck it big. The sports bettor had wagered heavily on GameDayVip.com and rightfully won $131,000 betting on the results of a basketball game. Little did he know the online gambling operator who owed him the winnings, Leonard Lastre, wasn't prepared to let the money go.
As it turns out Lastre was in cahoots with Miami-Dade Police Officer John Villar Jr. and the veteran officer's cousin Fausto Villar. The three had concocted a plan to rob Duarte of his winnings shortly after he picked up the money and at first everything appeared to be going according to plan.
Duarte showed up and collected his winnings from Lastre and on the way home a white unmarked Ford Taurus pulled him over. The Villars dressed as police officers stepped out of their car and began questioning him. Duarte claims he was asked for his identification and whether or not any contraband was in the car. They then switched focus to the bag containing the money. Fausto grabbed the bad and told Duarte that, "that the monies were evidence and that a narcotics detector canine was en route."
It was at this point that the Villars went back to their car and fled the scene. Little did they know Duarte wasn't about to take the loss and a chase soon ensued. While racing down the freeway, Duarte managed to catch the attention of a FHP Trooper who proceeded to pull the Villars car over.
Fausto Villar fled the scene and John Villar Jr. insisted that he had been driving alone and had stopped Duarte for reckless driving. Unfortunately for John several witnesses confirmed that a man matching Fausto's description had fled the scene and was possibly carrying something. Further investigation revealed phone records which showed several calls between the Villars and Lastre. All three are now facing charges of felony armed robbery with a firearm, armed burglary and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. In addition, Fausto Villar will also be facing charges of impersonating a police officer and possession of a bulletproof vest.
Despite all parties being detained, Mr. Duarte's winnings have yet to be recovered.
