$1.5 Million in Casino Chips Stolen by Helmeted Biker at the Bellagio

altWe may have a sequel to Ocean's Thirteen on our hands with the robbery of at least $1.5 million dollars worth of casino chips from the AAA Five Diamond award-winning Bellagio hotel and casino on Tuesday morning. The same man is suspected to have robbed the Suncoast Casino less than a week ago.

The man, who hides his identity under a motorcycle helmet, is no Danny Ocean, but he did manage to get away. He parked his motorcycle at the valet section at the casino and walked over to a craps table. That's when he pulled a gun on the patrons and demanded money. He ended up getting $1.5 million in casino chips instead. Once he had taken his fair share, the man fled the scene before police could subdue him. No one was hurt.

It is thought that the casino uses a special tracking chip which is suspected to be embedded in each of the chips used at the casino. If true, this will allow the chips to be identified should the robber try to cash them in down the road. Although the use of Radio-frequency identification has not been confirmed, it is highly likely that the Bellagio was using it in the stolen chips. Las Vegas police officer, Barbara Morgan said, "We have safeguards in place." So under any circumstances, it doesn't appear that the robber will be able to cash in the stolen chips.

This robbery marks the tenth one for the year in Las Vegas, up from 9 robberies last year. The police have little to go on as surveillance cameras did not reveal much about the robber. Witnesses believe the suspect to be Caucasian, about six feet tall and around 220 pounds. Those with information about the robbery or think they may know the man involved, are urged to call the Robbery Section at 1-888-3521.
