A Vietnamese American man is in the middle of a bitter lawsuit with the Sheraton Saigon Hotel Casino in Ho Chi Minh City over a $55.5 million jackpot. Ly Sam said that he was playing the Landlord Game at the Sheraton Saigon Hotel's Palazzo Club, when he set off the incredible jackpot. Allegedly the club manager congratulated him and told him that he would receive payment within three days but refused to provide Sam with written confirmation of his winnings. Thinking that something fishy was up Sam then took steps to safeguard his winnings including taking photos of the winning machine, collecting witness signatures at the casino, and writing a firsthand account of the events. While it may have seemed a little extreme to many at the time, it appears his concerns were well founded because the casino subsequently refused to pay out the massive prize.
Sam waited patiently for three days for his winnings but the casino refused to respond to his correspondences or explain what had happened to his winnings. He then contacted the club's operator, Dai Duong Joint Venture Company, and was told no payment would be forthcoming. The company claimed that his result was invalid because it resulted from a malfunction in the game machine and Ly Sam consequently began the biggest lawsuit in Vietnamese history.
Commenting on the case, his lawyer Tran Cong Ly Tao said, "Dai Duong Joint Venture must pay the money. Players pay money to play and so when a player wins, the game operator must pay the winner...Even the Penal Code can be based on to charge the game operator with abusing trust to appropriate assets."
For the moment the case is still pending. It should be interesting to see whether or not things will work out for Ly Sam in the long run.
