A South Korean man and woman were sentenced to more than a year in federal prison on Monday for running a large scale card-game cheating scheme last year which defrauded casinos out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Young Su Gy, 60, was said to have used a "holdout device" to switch cards in and out of the game to his advantage and Wookyung Kim, 34, was said to have acted as a blocker, who distracted casino staff while Gy used the device.
"Through this scheme, Gy and Kim were able to defraud Foxwoods of several hundred thousand dollars," said David Fein, U.S. Attorney in Connecticut, in a statement.
Judge Alvin Thompson of the U.S. District Court in Hartford, sentenced Gy to 18 months in prison and Kim to one year and a day in prison for cheating the Uncasville, Connecticut-based Foxwoods. In addition to jail time, the two have also been given a three years supervised release and were ordered to pay restitution of $870,505.
The two had faced the possibility of 20 years in prison but both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft and admitted to causing losses of between $400,000 and $1 million to Foxwoods.
