Anthony Carleo, the 29-year-old son of a Las Vegas judge who was arrested in connection with the $1.5 million worth of chips stolen from the Bellagio late last year, has pleaded not guilty on charges of armed robbery, assault, burglary and weapon charges. During the hearing a trial date was set for Jan. 10th, 2012 and if convicted Carleo could face some serious prison time.
The evidence is definitely stacked against Carleo. After the robbery he was spotted partying and gambling with high denomination chips at the Bellagio and it is also reported that he attempted to sell the chips online, even posting a picture of the chips signed "Biker Bandit." One of the posters online saw the ad and contacted the FBI who monitored the situation as Carleo traded phone calls and emails with the poster regarding the issue.
Carleo's father, Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge George Assad, is very well known in Las Vegas so it will be hard to find a judge that does not have some sort of connection to the family. District Court Judge Michelle Leavitt who accepted Carleo's plea disclosed that her family has publicly and privately supported Assad in a general election race to keep his post but neither attorney objected to her handling the case.
Carleo's lawyer, William Terry, declined comment after the brief hearing.
