Apple has finally released the first official app featuring online gambling to the iPhone. While mobile gaming is nothing new, Apple has always taken a firm stance against the practice, at least until now.
The new app is the work of Betfair. It will allow users to place bets on sports among other things. As of now the app is only available to residents of the United Kingdom and Ireland but that could all change one day. As it stands though, the app will have to access to the phones self-contained GPS and determine a player's location before placing bets. If someone attempts to place a bet from locations outside of the prescribed area they will be blocked which could become aggravating to the international gambler.
The release of the application arrives just in time for next month's World Cup event which is expected to set international records on volume and amounts wagered.
US players are of course barred from using the app for the time being. US telecommunications companies will not authorize devices to permit gambling applications and until some sort of legislation passes US players will just have to get use to being left out in the cold.
The app should spell great news for UK and Irish residents however. As the gambling industry grows in Europe we can expect a number of new technologies to make their way into the market.
US players can still make bets the old fashioned way at Bodog.com!
