ASA, the UK advertising watchdog group, has forced the 888.com to remove a pop up ad from its Facebook page. The ad which began appearing on 888's page back in February featured the picture of a slot machine and text asking, "Addicted to slots?" The ad was said to encourage compulsive gambling and ASA decided to take action against 888.com after receiving only a single complaint.
In its ruling statement, the group said: "We considered...that... the ad trivialized gambling addiction, and condoned and encouraged gambling behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm. We therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible."
888.com said that the ad was created by Online Media Solutions without their knowledge or consent and that they had not even been aware of the ad until they were contacted by advertising authorities regarding the complaint. They ordered the immediate removal of the ad and it has been taken down.
Facebook responded to the matter reminding users that they are not responsible for the content that advertisers put on their facebook accounts though the ad did go against the social network's advertising guidelines it was removed in a timely manner and they have nothing more to say on the matter.
