The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority of Atlantic City has approved the boundaries for a new tourism district. The district will cover a large portion of the city including Boardwalk, the Bader Field airport property, Marina District, and Gardner's Basin. Hence forth, the state will take over responsibility for public safety, cleanliness and development within the district, taking a heavy burden off of the area's struggling casinos.
The measure passed with a nearly unanimous vote. The only person who opposed the bill was Mayor Lorenzo Langford who has been very outspoken about city official's efforts to help the casino industry. Last week he said that the state was treating Atlantic City "like a pimp treats a prostitute" so it was no surprise to anyone that he went against the bill.
Governor Chris Christie dismissed such opposition saying that the state is getting involved for a reason.
"It has become a necessary situation because of the complete incompetence and corruption in Atlantic City over decades," he said. "Is it my normal bent to want to do that? No. But they left us with no alternative.
"There is pure evidence of incompetence in running that city. I understand the City Council and the mayor are upset about it, but that's the way it goes. They should have done something about it long before I came to town."
