The Australian Federal Government has confirmed that clubs with 15 or fewer poker machines will be exempt from laws restricting the amount players can wager on video poker machines (pokies) until 2018. The Government said that it's only appropriate that they give smaller clubs more time to adapt to the changes since they are likely to be more heavily hit by the measure then larger casinos.
"We do know how important the smaller clubs and pubs in regional communities are," said Families Minister Jenny Macklin. "They also provide a lot of support for their local sporting and community groups, so we have recognized that more time is needed."
Gambling expert, Dr Alex Blascszynski from the University of Sydney, told ABC Australia that it would be a good idea to pair the delays with more support for problem gamblers since most small clubs are located in areas that do not have good access to support systems. He defended the measure saying, "The clubs in rural areas have a special case because they form the social hub of the area...The clubs there aren't on the same scale as the metropolitan clubs and while there are still problem gamblers, I think some of the other social issues probably need to be balanced out."
One has to wonder though if problem gamblers will simply flock to smaller clubs if they know they won't have to worry about dealing with limits when they go to them.
