Australians who lose money gambling online may soon be allowed to void their bets under proposed legislation. Senator Nick Xenophon, one of Australia's most virulent anti-gambling politicians, introduced a bill which will allow gamblers to void any bets they make online if they paid for their gambling entertainment with a credit card.
"With voided credit card bets, I have to say there's something appealing to me about online casinos losing their shirts rather than the punters," said Xenophon. "It would certainly make online casinos think twice about accepting Australian cards."
Online gambling is illegal in Australia but despite the laws, Australians continue to gamble online. Since online casinos cannot advertise in the country most sites rely on affiliate sites to bring in players. The new restrictions will also apply to affiliated sites and if it passes it could have devastating effects on both the casino and casino affiliate industries currently operating in the country.
It's unclear how many players would take advantage of the rules should the bill pass but chances are casinos would simply ban Australian players from using their credit cards and force players to rely on other forms of online payment.
