Barney Frank's bill proposing the legalization, regulation and taxation of online gambling recently received some added support. This is good news considering that the bill's timing is precariously close to the implementation of the UIGEA.
Dina Titus of Nevada and William Owens of New York recently added their names to the ever growing list of co-sponsors. Many in the industry consider Titus' approval of the bill to be an especially auspicious sign since the Nevada's Congressional delegation is heavily influenced by the land-based casino industry. It does not seem likely that such a thing would happen if the big land casinos weren't alright with the idea.
Despite the growing support for the bill however, its hearing remains postponed. Without the continued progress of the bill it is likely that the UIGEA will go into full effect and it will be too late to completely stop certain changes that are going on.
With the federal government continuing to fall in the red, it does not seem responsible for members of Congress to continue to ignore the potential source of income Frank's new bill could provide. If the UIGEA goes into effect, it could hurt the banking industry and its consumers and may not do anything to stop the online industry itself.
Please contact your local representative today and let them know where you stand on this crucial issue. There is still time to pass a bill that would delay the implementation of the UIGEA and give Frank and other online gambling advocates more time to pass a crucial piece of legislation. Don't delay.
