It appears that Ladbrokes has no patience for inactive players. A blogger on Econsultancy.com expressed outrage this week when he discovered that he was being charged an Inactive Account Fee for his Ladbrokes account. Apparently the site's T&Cs state that if a player does not wager on the site for a period of 12 consecutive months they will start charging your account an administration fee of £2 or 5% of the balance of the account on the date is deemed inactive. From that point, the site has the right to continue to charge your account every month until you return to playing on the site or until your funds are tapped out and your account is closed.
"As a persuasion tactic this sucks and is borderline unethical considering that it relates to gambling," Chris Lake writes. "I can see no good reason for charging customers an 'administration' fee for dormancy. Terminating dormant customer accounts might be a smart idea, as far as data cleansing is concerned, though that assumes that they cannot be reactivated. But this isn't termination, and it feels pretty close to blackmail."
Turns out that Ladbrokes isn't the only site out there that charges fees to inactive users. If you have an account with a site and you know that you will probably never use it again it is probably a good idea to talk to a customer service agent and have your account formally closed rather than simply let it sit there.
