The British Advertising Standards Authority has pulled a Betfair ad from the airwaves. The ad which features two men talking between a middle man was made to advertise the companies new Betting Exchange which allows players to come together in order to bet at odds sought by themselves or offered by other customers. The new system effectively eliminates the need for a traditional bookmaker so it is only fitting that the ad states, "On Betfair you cut out the middle man, which means you win bigger". It appears that TV viewers did not agree however, as the British Advertising Standards Authority pulled the ad after receiving 23 complaints.
The majority of the complaints came from viewers who felt that the suggestion that Betfair operated without a middleman was incorrect and misleading. They felt that the ad needed to clarify that Betfair took a five percent commission on winning bets and that in a way they were in fact the middle man.
Betfair commented on the matter by saying, "Betfair is committed to high standards of integrity and has agreed over 40 Memoranda of Understanding with sports governing bodies."
No word yet on when a new ad will hit the airwaves.
