One of the biggest concerns many have had about the recent resignation of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is that religious groups will gain control of the country before democracy has a chance to grow. It's been just a little over a week and a series of targeted attacks on some of Cairo's most famous casinos has signaled a possible shift towards religious intolerance. The Europa Egypt hotel was attacked by a group of "about 1,000 young guys", and the Ramses casino was firebombed causing two fatalities. The attacks have been largely blamed on Muslim theologians who have long called casinos "dens of vice."
As one of the police officers present at the attack on Europa Egypt explains, "We are all religious, it's just that some of the people in our society, a narrow current of them, take this to an extreme. They destroy anyone who is not like them. They have been using the chaos to their advantage."
The Islamic Sumni transnational movement known as The Muslim Brothers denies any connection to the crimes. They claim that the attacks are probably anti-revolution police trying to stir up sectarian violence. Investigation into the crimes is already underway but with the situation in Egypt threatening to escalate police already have a lot on their plate.
