It seems as though it was inevitable that the largest privately build project in history would face many obstacles and "speed bumps" during the first few years.
Due to the economic situation (which seems to be improving) and the massive cost of funding the construction and opening of CityCenter, the casino has been either unable or unwilling to make the enormous payments associated with the development of the huge project.
Perini Building Company, a general contractor fully involved in constructing CityCenter has filed a suit against several individual groups controlled by the owners of CityCenter, MGM Mirage and Infinity World Development Corporation. $493 million dollars in unpaid construction work is being sought by Perini.
Tutor Perini Chairman and Chief Executive Ronald Tutor commented on the lack of payment saying, "We are doing whatever we have to do to protect ourselves and our subcontractors. They simply stopped making payments and started offering excuses."
The lawsuit states that MGM and Infinity informed Perini to "cease all construction activities at the Harman," a currently in progress construction site scheduled to open this year. Security was even told to escort the contractor off the site.
When informed of the intention by Perini to file the ginormous suit, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for MGM, Alan Feldman stated, "Both parties see these final billings differently. We have submitted this for arbitration, which it what the contract calls for, but they (Perini) don't think that arbitration is appropriate, Ultimately, the legal system will determine what jurisdiction it will go to a how it will all get worked out."
