A bill designed to allow dog tracks to transition into casinos has passed the Florida House of Representatives. The bill which would allow dog tracks to offer poker without running any actual greyhound races passed by an 86-31 margin and will now move on to the State Senate. If it should pass there, it is likely to be signed into law could go into effect as soon as next year.
The majority of the bill's opponents does not believe in the expansion of gambling but quite a bit of opposition has come from dog breeders and other interests group who feel that dog tracks have no business calling themselves a dog track if they do not actually offer dog racing.
Dog tracks have suffered because of increasing pressure from animal rights groups and a lack of interest in the down economy. Under the current law, dog tracks must hold a minimum number of races in order to be allowed to offer poker and because tracks typical lose money hosting the races the majority of greyhound track owners are in support of the measure.
"It will eliminate an artificial propping up of an industry," commented Representative Dana Young sponsor of the bill. According to Young, tax revenues from greyhound racing have fallen 96% in just the last decade and the state would be better off increasing revenues by eliminating the requirement for dog racing all together.
The issue is still a topic of much debate but at this time it is expected to pass the Senate.
