Florida legislators have been struggling to fix the state's budget but it appears that even though they were forced to implement cuts to public schools, nursing homes, hospitals, and other government programs they managed to find $400,000 to run a gambling study. The state will be looking into the "revenues derived, the expenses incurred and the potential benefit for Florida from destination resorts and horse racing."
Legislators considered a bill earlier this year which would have allowed casino operators to build a number of huge resort-style casinos in the Sunshine State. The bill failed to pass but the bill's sponsor Rep. Erik Fissen said that he hopes the study will help pave the way for a similar bill next year, "We hope a $400,000 study will result in the impetus I need to pass this that will result in tens of millions of dollars to the state in the future."
Senate budget chief J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, agreed that the measure would be crucial in getting legislation passed. He said, "Some think it would have a very positive impact on the state and without a definitive study on it, we won't know."
While the study certainly costs a pretty penny it will probably be worth it to the state in the long run if it does in fact help legislation to pass. Resort-style casinos would be a cash cow to the state but that hasn't stopped many from shouting outrage over money being pulled from important programs to help pay for the study.
