Germany's states have finally agreed to break up monopolies on state gaming services. Next year, sports betting in Germany will be opened up to private providers in line with a ruling by the European Court of Justice.
A special meeting took place in Germany earlier this week during which time ministers hammered out the details regarding the measure. Under the current system the state is responsible for betting and sports advertising of gambling services is forbidden but under the new system seven nationwide companies will be given licenses to provide gambling services and advertisements for sports betting companies will be allowed but not on television.
Of course the states will still place some heavy restrictions on what kind of betting can take place. Bets for example will only be allowed on the outcome of games and live betting during sports events will be strictly forbidden. Prop bets and bets on the names of scorers will also be banned.
Bwin made headlines earlier this week slamming the new proposals saying that they were "even more incon-sistent and incoherent" than the current laws. They predicted that the new measured would "be criticized by the European Commission for lack of compliance with EU law" and they expect that Germany will be forced to open the market even more in the near future.
