The New Jersey Senate voted 29-5 in favor of online gambling on Monday. The bill which allows Atlantic City casino operators to offer online gambling to New Jersey residents and players abroad includes a 15% tax on gross gaming. Should it pass the New Jersey State Assembly and be signed into law it will make New Jersey the first state in the U.S. to offer licensed intra-state online gambling.
The bill which was authored by Sen. Raymond Lesniak will allow casino to offer online poker, roulette, baccarat, blackjack, craps, big six wheel, slots, sic bo, red dog, pai gow, and any variation of such games.
"It's going to be presented to the governor and I don't think he's going to have any option but to sign it before the end of the year," Sen. Lesniak told reporters. "We have to put forward regulations... but we're very well versed in regulating gambling... so we're in good shape to get this rolling as soon as possible."
No word yet on when the sites could be up and running but should things continue to move at the current pace one could expect to see a few sites launched before the start of next summer if not sooner.
