Hawaii may have given up on legalizing poker but it seems they have not given up on bringing gambling to the state. The Hawaii State Legislature has introduced a new piece of legislation which would establish a gaming development district and grant a renewable 20-year license for a casino resort complex in the district. As the 60-day Hawaii State Legislative session nears its end, lawmakers are scrambling to find ways to balance the state budget which has an estimated $1.3 billion shortfall for fiscal years 2012 and 2013.
Lobbying for the legislature is a new group called Citizens for a Better Way which is believed to be affiliated with a Michigan-based organization, Marketing Resource Group. The group has doing all it can to garner support from Hawaii residents but if history is any indication they may be wasting their time. Groups have been lobbying unsuccessfully for gambling in Hawaii for nearly a decade and it's unlikely that the state would shy away from legalized poker out of fear that it would lead to gambling expansion only to turn around and choose to build a casino in the same year. It will all likely come down to how much Hawaii residents are willing to pay in taxes should they continue to keep the gambling industry out of the state.
