Hollywood Slots Hotel has come up with an interesting way to turn their guest's trash into somebody else's treasure. Hotels usually throw out anything left behind when a guest checks out but the staff at Hollywood Slots hotel collects soaps and shampoos left over by guests and donates them to a charitable organization called Clean the World, which cleans and recycles them to be used again by people in need.
"The room attendants collect the soap through each room and then at the end of the day we put it in a bin," said Hollywood Slots Director of Hotel Operations David Beaudoin.
Once the bins are full they then get shipped to the organization's base in Orlando, Florida where their contents are, "Steamed, sanitized, and re-packaged." Some of the soap is sent to third world countries but a lot of it is also sent to places like homeless shelters in the US.
Beaudoin touted on the organization saying that it, "Helps the environment, soap that would normally just end up in a landfill is put in the hands of people that need something as basic as a bar of soap so it's a great program. It's really a win win for everybody."
Hollywood Slots is the first hotel in Maine to take part in the program. It costs less than a dollar a room per month to send the soap out and Beaudoin says the hotel hopes they are just the first of many hotels to take part in the program, "It is surprising at the end of a week when something that you throw away every single day you really don't realize until a couple weeks go by and you look at a bin and it's full of soap."
