Gerlarmo Cammisano, son of William "Willie the Rat" Cammisano, plead guilty on Wednesday to charges of conducting an illegal gambling business. The Kansas City man ran an illegal betting ring taking bets through toll-free numbers and web pages leading a group of people that paid out and received payments via third-party.
One of the reasons the case has drawn national attention is the fact that the gamblers themselves have refused to testify. Many were retained in jail as a result of their refusal to cooperate but attorneys for the witnesses argued that the bettors could not be kept in custody because they committed no crime. Interestingly enough Cammisano played the part of one of these bettors back in the 90s and as a result does not have to testify against other defendants today.
As part of the plea agreement prosecutors have agreed to drop six other charges against Cammisano but that probably won't be enough to keep him out of jail. His sentencing date has yet to be determined but it is expected that he could face up to five years in prison for running the illegal ring. Just goes to show once again that crime doesn't pay.
