Iowa has become the latest state in the U.S. to consider regulating online poker and other forms of online gambling. A new bill being sponsored by state Senator Jeff Danielson would allow Iowans over the age of 21 to play at online poker rooms. There would be certain restrictions on this type of play including maximum session lengths and fund limits but should it pass it will be the first time that Iowans will be able to play online without worry of prosecution.
It is the legislators hope that the new proposal would keep players from resorting to playing at offshore gambling sites. It is estimated that Iowans spend upwards of $35 million every year playing at overseas poker sites and that money is currently doing nothing to help the local economy. Any profits currently made on the sites go to foreign countries and no tax revenue is taken by the state. Should legislation pass Iowa could create an in-state site which would provide jobs to its residents and the state could earn millions of dollars in tax revenue in the first 5 years alone.
With many states struggling to balance their budget Iowa is not alone, other states currently looking into similar legislation include New Jersey, California, and Florida.
