The Iowa Senate has approved a gambling bill that will allow for investigation into online poker. The bill was originally intended to legalize online poker but when a survey found that the state was not in favor of the measure they opted to study into the matter further before coming right out and legalizing it. It is estimated that more than 150,000 Iowans player online poker on regular basis and were the practice to be regulated and taxed it could bring in millions in state revenue.
"Technology and time marches on. We have an issue before us that outpaced our own laws," said Sen. Jeff Danielson. "This issue has risen to such a level of economic implications for the United States. Someone is going to act. Iowans are pragmatic and practical. In this case, I think Iowa citizens deserve a framework, consumer protection and a regulatory framework."
Also included in the bill, is a measure that would be permit gamblers to make deposits to place online or telephone bets on live horse races and a measure that would no longer require casinos that have successfully passed two referendums to face a referendum every eight years in order to maintain their gambling license.
