Jazz Sportsbook has been implicated in an alleged $178M sting by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown as part of a three year investigation into illegal bookmaking. According to reports arrests involving agents and bookies have been made in New York City, Louisiana, Florida and Nevada.
Over the years Brown has spearheaded a number of criminal investigations into offshore sports betting including the arrest of William Bryant III a premium sales manager for the NBA's New Orleans Hornets.
Prosecutors say that two of the arrests were American's Robert Baselice and Charles Cicalo who worked as bookmakers on crownsports.com and jazzsports.com. Jazzsports is one of the pioneers of Costa Rican offshore sports betting. Its presence is smaller than many sites on the market but it enjoys pivotal search placement which may be way the site was targeted. The company is best known for the operation of a small land-based casino in Costa Rica. Despite the investigation normal business operations are not likely to be impacted by this case.
Millions of dollars in property were seized as part of the sting with more than a dozen search warrants given out over the course of a few days.
"Such computerized wire rooms operate around the clock and can handle a large volume of bettors at any one time, thus allowing the organizers to increase their illicit profits without having to bother with the time-consuming, record-keeping aspects of a more traditional, paper-based bookmaking operation," Brown said. "Unfortunately for the defendants, the law enforcement community is just as adept in using new technology to stop those involved in such criminal pursuits."
