Joe Jackson is moving ahead with plans to build a museum and casino in honor of his recently deceased son Michael Jackson in the late singer's hometown of Gary, Indiana. Joe Jackson and the town's mayor Rudy Clay announced that they have begun launching a feasibility study into a massive Jackson complex that would include a museum, concert hall, performing arts centre, pavilion and possibly a hotel, restaurant and gambling parlor.
Gary's board of public works and safety has transferred a large piece of development property to the Jackson Family Foundation in anticipation of the project. The 300 acres is located in a prime location near a highway, sports stadium and golf course. If the town were to become the Jackson equivalent of Elvis Presley's Graceland, the board could expect up to 750,000 visitors a year and as much as $150 million in annual revenue so thus far everyone appears to be on board with the project.
They aren't the only location that could see the construction project however. Similar projects have been suggested in California but Joe Jackson insists that Gary is where his son would have wanted his principal memorial. "We're bringing something back," he said noting that the complex would provide thousands of jobs in the area.
Not everyone in Gary however seems certain that turning the city into a Mecca for Jackson's fans is the best idea. City officials estimate that the project would cost about $300 million dollars and they aren't sure that it is what the city needs right now.
The city has already announced plans to unveil a newly relocated Jackson monument made of granite at the singer's first family home.
More information on the plans as they develop.
