 Las Vegas police made an arrest in connection with the recent $1.5 million Bellagio casino heist on Wednesday. Anthony Michael Carleo, the son of Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge George Assad, was caught trying to sell high-value chips taken during the heist to undercover police officers. Carleo was ironically staying as a guest at the Bellagio when he was taken into custody. A search warrant was quickly executed for both the hotel and his father's home and so far no other arrests have been made.
Police and gambling insiders were confident that the person responsible for the crime would be caught. The high value chips would be worthless in a few months and the thief would never be able to cash them in without giving himself away. They knew that their best chance was to try and catch the robber selling off the high value chips and it appears that everything went according to plan.
Carleo will not only face charges in connection to the Bellagio heist but he could also be held responsible for a $20,000 robbery that took place at the Suncoast Casino early last month.
According to reports Carleo was once a successful real estate broker and business owner but after going bankrupt in 2009 he lost everything and was forced to move into his father's home in Las Vegas. So far Assad has refused to comment on the matter. Assad will be up for re-election this year and it's unclear how his son's arrest will affect his campaign. The fact that Carleo took his step-father's last name will probably help Assad's chances of distancing himself from the crimes.
