South Korean Soccer League (K-League) Manchester United is being accused of match-fixing their games. South Korean officials arrested two gambling brokers on Wednesday for bribing professional player into manipulating the results of a game in order to insure that bookmakers made the most profits possible. Two of the players in question were arrested on Thursday. The goalie for the team is suspected of receiving 100 million won ($91,900) of the profits made off the fixed game and a midfielder is suspected of receiving 1.2 million won for taking part in the manipulation.
Police say they first began looking into the matter when rumors surfaced that the death of 24-year-old goalkeeper Yoon Ki-won was not a suicide but was related to organized crime rings and match-rigging brokers. There have been rumors of match-fixing for quite some time but this is the first time in South Korea's professional football league's history that such a scandal has come into public light. Illegal sports betting is big business in Korea and an estimated 35 trillion won ($32 billion) in illegal sport betting is said to have been conducted in 2010 alone. It is very likely that some police and public officials have been bribed into ignoring the matter over the years, but as the old saying goes, "it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt."
Yesterday afternoon, 16 directors of the K-League teams convened for an emergency meeting to discuss how to handle the scandal and what steps need to be taken in order to ensure that this sort of thing does not happen again.
