The Kenyan government has set up a taskforce to change the country's betting laws and protect their citizens from illegal promotions. The new 15 member team will be in charge of making changes to the Betting Lotteries and Gaming Act, they will create a National Lotteries Bill and a National Gaming Bill, and amend the Billing Act of 1966. The proposed measures will address the changes that have occurred in Kenya in the past 45 years and crack down on gambling organizers who have been taking advantage of punters in recent years.
Concern over the relevance of the country's present Act was made apparent when in 2008 a major promoter failed to pay out winnings and to contribute 25% to charity as stipulated by the Betting Act and then last year a second firm failed to award winners all the prizes or changed the value of prizes mid-way through the game period. The current act simply cannot keep up with today's current technology. It relies on lottery companies for income declaration and money laundering and other illegal activities are common.
It is the country's hope that by instituting new laws they will be able to restore Kenyans' faith in the gaming and lottery industry.
