The casino industry suffered a hard year in 2009. A report recently released by the American Gaming Association shows that gross gaming revenues were down 5.5% compared to 2008 with total revenues at only $30.74 billion.
The Association's State of the States: The AGA Survey of Casino Entertainment is one of the most comprehensive reports on the gambling industry. It covers revenue generated from race tracks, card rooms and casinos with a year by year graph of the revenue generated over the years and it provides a plethora of other data on the topic.
According to the report it was New Jersey who was hardest hit by the revenue decline. The state's gambling centers ended in the red last year with -13.3% in revenue. Nevada's gambling revenue also suffered a significant drop, taking in more than a billion dollars less in 2009 than in 2008.
In contrast Pennsylvania saw the largest jump in revenue. Their overall revenue increased 21.6% from $1.616 billion in 2008 to $1.965 billion in 2009. These numbers are expected to grow as table games are set to be incorporated into gambling centers across the state.
USA online gambling sites are also thriving according to the report but this may be due in part to the fact that there is no regulatory body to govern these gambling practices. The American Gaming Association does, however, assert that "online gambling technology has grown to a point where the industry can be safely accommodated."
