Loto-Quebec announced on Friday that they will be launching the first legal online gambling site in Quebec, Canada on December 1st. The site which has been released under the name, Espacejeux, will offer poker, slots and table games, as well as a number of other casino favorites. The site is expected to attract anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 players by Christmas but if the recent turnout in BC is any indication that number could be much larger than anticipated.
The new site will be restricted to residents of the province, who are 18 years of age and over. Players will need to provide personal information in order to confirm their identity, and they will be limited to wagering up to $10,000 a week. The network will only be accessible from IP addresses from the Quebec area and will not be available to players when they are out of the country.
Quebec expects to make $50 million in annual revenues from the site which will go a long way towards covering the cost of government programs.
While Canada continues to take steps towards providing their citizens with legal and safe online gambling access, similar legislation in the US has made very little ground. New Jersey may soon become the first state to legalize online gambling but if something major doesn't happen during the lame duck session of congress, legislation on the federal level could be back to square one.
