Legislation for Gambling Regulation May Soon Come to Texas

altThe Texas legislature may once again be considering new gambling options for their residents as part of the upcoming legislative session. The state is facing a shortfall of more than $22 billion dollars and Texas lawmakers are scrambling to find ways to infuse the state with funding. Lobbyists are using this opportunity to push for casinos which could help the state shrink their ever growing deficit but in a state run by Republicans it's unclear whether or not their efforts will come to fruition.

Gambling was first introduced into the state in 1992 when legislation passed to create the Texas lottery. Not only did the lottery help the state's general budget but it also provided much needed funding to the state's education system.

Residents and lobbyists have argued that an optional gambling tax would be more widely accepted by residents than raising general taxes. Rather than making everyone pay up, gambling would raise much needed funding by taxing player's winnings and by charging casino's for licensing fees.

Of course in a state where Elephants run rampant opponents are out in full force. They have already begun to preach about the social ills that come with gambling but it may come down to simple dollars and sense. Many Texans have spoken out about their wishes of a Casino coming to their state as they have to go to Oklahoma for their casino fun. It would be nice to see one come to Dallas.

For now we will just have to wait and see if such a bill makes any progress.

As always, stay tuned to Casinofan for more news and updates.
