A substantial drop in weddings has many in Las Vegas questioning where the love has gone. Nevada wedding professionals have reported a huge drop in wedding ceremonies which they blame on the foul economy and an ebbing interest in marriage.
Local governments, which issue marriage licenses, are feeling the pinch. Clark County which performs 85% of all marriages in Nevada and nearly 5% of all marriages in the US made more than $7 million off of weddings in 2004 and last year, wedding-related revenue fell to roughly $5.5 million. Coupled with declining property taxes, the love recession has had devastating consequences for the local economy.
"It is a major part of the tourism," said County Clerk Diana Alba.
She said that part of the issues is that the marriage demographic is aging, "The baby boomer generation is all getting old. Marriage goes in and out of fashion, and I think right now it is not as fashionable to get married."
To make up for the wedding downturn, many chapels are encouraging long-time couples to renew their wedding vowels and are promoting commitment ceremonies for gay couples. There are only so many ways chapels can try and offset the wedding crash though and some worry that Las Vegas could be in for some serious trouble if things do not turn around.
