The Macau Government may soon raise the minimum age for casino patrons. A new piece of legislation could raise the minimum age for entering casinos from 18 to 21. If the bill passes, those below 21 years of age who enter the casino will face fines of MOP1,000 (US$125) to MOP10,000 and the casinos they enter could be charged anywhere from MOP10,000 to MOP500,000. If someone underage wins a prize in the casino all of the winnings would be forfeited to the government.
The bill still needs approval from the Legislative Assembly before it can go into law. At this point in time, it is unclear whether or not the bill has support from legislatures but if it does pass it could hurt Macau's appeal as a resort gambling destination. The minimum age for gambling is 21 in most parts of the world so Macau was (and currently is) a hot spot for young travels looking to hit it big. Of course, Macau has experienced fantastic growth over the past few years so chances are they will still be well off either way.
