They say money isn't everything and a recent tragedy in New Jersey shows just how true that is. John Leatherman, a man who won a $1,018,861 slots jackpot at Trump Taj Mahal Casino Hotel in Atlantic City apparently hung himself on a bridge this weekend and was only discovered when his decapitated torso was seen floating in the water.
Leatherman, who served eight years in the Navy and was involved in Operation: Desert Storm during the first Iraqi war, was by all reports a good guy. His stepmother Kathleen described him as "very smart, very focused. He had a good sense of humor and was a hard worker." She did not seem to have any idea as to why he would kill himself. She said, "He was a good man. I've known him since he was a little boy. He was happy."
Up until the incident Leather worked both as a carpenter and volunteer firefighter. Though his death is being regarded as a suicide Michael Clancy of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said that they will still be investigating into the matter.
According to the World Health Organization over one million people commit suicide each year. It is the 30th leading cause of death worldwide and according to the National Safety Council it's the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S. If you know anyone that may be contemplating suicide or you suspect that they may be suffering with severe depression please be sure to reach out and help. These sort of tragedies are often avoidable and sometimes all someone needs is a shoulder to cry on and a little love and support.
