While the U.S. Department of Justice is busy trying to shut down online poker rooms, the U.S. Department of Labor is busy helping land based casinos. The Labor Department has given the Mohegan Sun, a National Emergency Grant of $335,400 to help Mohegan Sun Casino employees who were laid off last September.
"The Labor Department is committed to helping all Americans who have lost jobs through no fault of their own," Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis said in a statement. "This grant will provide training and other services to help dislocated workers prepare for good jobs in Connecticut's growing industries."
The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board will use the money to help former Mohegan Sun employees with resume writing and interviewing skills and provide them with training for jobs in high-growth sectors, such as advanced manufacturing, "green" energy and health care.
Since 2009, the state has received more than $4 million in National Emergency Grants, and according to the U.S. Department of Labor website Mohegan Sun is definitely not the first casino to take advantage of the system. Foxwoods Casinos have been awarded almost $743,000 in national emergency grants in the last two years.
