altThe North Carolina Education Lottery is researching casino-style video gambling machines. State legislatures are currently debating whether or not to regulate video gambling and a plan to use the lottery to regulate video gambling has been discussed. Lottery Executive Director Alice Garland requested details from companies who could potentially run a centrally operated video gambling terminal system on Monday but she insists that her request was for research purposes only.

"Should the Legislature decide to do something, they're going to want it done yesterday," Garland said. She said that the request for information, "gives us a legitimate way for us to get educated" and would allow them to avoid any informal discussions that could be seen as favoritism. According to Garland, Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue's staff has been asking a lot of questions about video lottery gambling in recent weeks but that, "I've not gotten an affirmative response that they're going to do anything."

State legislatures banned video poker machines back in 2007 and have tried twice since then to prohibit video sweepstakes machines. With the state budget in crisis however many former opponents of regulated gambling are changing their tune. It is estimated that the state could generate $576 million annually if they legalized video poker machines again and as the saying goes "Money Talks, BS Walks".
